The aim of the project is a) to describe the linguistic and extralinguistic elements influencing the linguistic evolution in different contact situations and b) to explain the current changes that the linguistic and the cultural contacs have caused in some Finnish-Ugrian languages. One part of the project (the research of FM Eve Mikone) concentrates on the Finnish languages of the Baltic Sea area which have received ompulses from different Indo-European languages but also have had influences on each other. The main aim of the research is to find out to what extent the south-east dialects of the Finnish language show such lexical characteristics that are completely missing in the other Finnish dialects, and how the existence of these characteristics can be explained. The material is gathered from the dialectal word archives at the Research Institute for the Languages of Finland and from the corresponding Estonian archives in Tallinn. The other part of the project (the research of FL Magdolna Kovács) will map out the changes that have taken place in the languages of Finnish and Hungarian immigrants in Australia. The aim of the research is to define the linguistic characteristics that are the most sensitive vs most resistant to the influence of a foreign language, and to find out if related languages show parallel evolutionary tendencies when exposed to the influence of an Indo-European language.
